Day 96 Something to Smile About

In an insanely good mood
.
And surprisingly, it’s all because of work. Yeah, that thing that I declared myself a failure in just two entries ago. So let’s explain before anyone assumes that I’m bipolar.

1)

I’m writing up my charts on my patients when a Filipino nurse comes up to me (I repeat: they’re everywhere!!). She smiles politely (they all do; it’s an island thing) and goes,

“Hey, do you remember your Tita S?”

I frown, because no one on this country should know about my Tita S because, well, no one knows about her or my father’s side of the family period. Oh, and she’s kinda in another continent across the Pacific. But I nod anyway because I’m too shocked and go,

“Yes. How do you know her?”

Her island-greeting smile never leaves her face as she replies, “Oh, her husband, Tito W, is my uncle.”

I stared and likely made a funny face like I couldn’t believe it. Of course I’d find a distant relative I wasn’t even aware of in the one hospital where my family members could be counted on one hand.

But it was funny, and she was really sweet that I was too delighted to be exasperated.

2)

I got through 13 hours, finished all my procedures, took care of all my patients on schedule without hitches, even managed to complete every last bit of my documentation all on time (which seems like an easy task unless you’ve got meds, feeds, and labs that all just have to be done at the same freakin time [shoot me]).

To get through those 13 hours, only 12 of which I was actually on the clock, could only be explained by two theories: a miracle, or even more unbelievable, actual personal and professional progress.

Shocking? Yes. Yes it is.

3)

Now that I’ve really started working on my actual shift, I found how exactly how much I’m really making.

This factoid alone deserves an entry of its own. But that’d be too short. And that isn’t fun. This job though? Not as bad as I’d hoped. Well, now that I’m getting the hang of things without completely making an idiot of myself and endangering tiny people.

Happy, very happy face.
